That is why this recipe is a great option for busy weeknights or casual gatherings.

Ingredients and Substitutes
Chicken breasts, boneless and skinless (3) – You can also try other proteins like shrimp or tofu, although I prefer how it turns out with chicken.
Garlic powder (1 tbsp) – You can also use garlic flakes or minced garlic for a stronger flavor.
Onion powder (1 tbsp) – If you don’t have onion powder, you can use fresh chopped onions or onion flakes.
Oregano (1 tsp) – Dried thyme or Italian seasoning can be great alternatives.
Crushed chili pepper flakes (a pinch) – Substitute with cayenne pepper or paprika for a bit of heat.
Salt and black pepper, to taste
Butter, unsalted (2 tbsp) – You can also use olive oil or ghee for a stronger flavor.
Yellow onions, thinly sliced (5 large) – Sweet onions or white onions are great alternatives.
Chicken broth (1/4 cup) – Use vegetable broth for a plant-based option or a bouillon cube dissolved in water if you don’t have chicken broth.
Garlic, minced (4 cloves) – Swap for garlic paste if you don’t have fresh garlic.
Mozzarella cheese, shredded (1 cup) – If you are feeling adventurous, you can use shredded Monterey Jack, provolone, or a dairy-free cheese.
Fresh parsley, chopped – Try fresh cilantro, chives, or dried parsley if you don’t have fresh parsley.

How to Make French Onion Chicken
Step 1. Preheat your oven to 400°F. Prepare a casserole dish by greasing it with oil.
Pound the chicken breasts to thin them out a bit. Then, season both sides with garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, chili pepper flakes, salt, and black pepper.
Step 2. Place the chicken breasts in the casserole dish.

Step 3. Grab a skillet and place it over medium-high heat. Add the butter and let it melt.
Step 4. Now, add the onions.

Step 5. Start cooking the onions to caramelize them. Make sure to stir them occasionally.
Step 6. When the pan starts to dry, pour the chicken broth to prevent it from burning. Keep on stirring it until the onions turn brown.
Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds. Take the skillet off the heat and let the onions cool down.

Step 7. Grab the caramelized onions and place them on top of the chicken breasts. Make sure you cover every part of the chicken breasts.
Step 8. Sprinkle the mozzarella cheese on top of the chicken breasts.

Step 9. Place it in the oven and bake for 20 minutes. Make sure the chicken cooks completely and the cheese starts to bubble.
Turn it to broil and cook for another 2 minutes until the cheese turns slightly golden brown.
Step 10. Once it’s cooked, remove it from the oven and garnish it with fresh parsley before serving.

Pin ItHow I Would Modify This Recipe
- Make it Spicy: Add some extra heat, like adding some chipotle powder or cayenne pepper.
- Add Veggies: Layer sautéed spinach, mushrooms, or thinly sliced zucchini beneath the onions.
What I Would Serve with This French Onion Chicken
- Roasted veggies
- Spinach tomato salad
- Mashed cauliflower
- Crispy salad
- Cauliflower rice
- Zucchini noodles
- Mango avocado salad
- Green salad
- Flourless oatmeal bread

My Tips & Tricks
- Caramelize Takes Time: The key to getting all the incredible flavor is to let the onions caramelize. Take your time, stir it often, and don’t rush the process.
- Rest Your Onions: After cooking the onions, give them time to cool before topping the chicken. This helps them set and hold their place.
- Broil the Cheese: I cannot emphasize enough never to skip this step. Everybody loves those golden-brown and bubbly edges.

My Storage Tips
If you’ve made more of the chicken than you can eat, don’t worry!
Place any leftovers in an airtight container and keep them in the fridge for up to 3-4 days. You can also store it in the freezer and keep it there for up to 3 months.
When you are ready to have this recipe again, warm it in the oven at 350°F until it’s heated through. You can also use the microwave for a quick reheat.
Quick Tip!
To prevent the chicken from drying, add a splash of chicken broth before you reheat it.

Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400F. Spray a casserole dish with oil.

Once the pan starts getting dry, pour in the chicken broth to prevent it from burning, continue stirring until the onions brown up fully.
